Opening on Bloomsday, renowned artist Guggi celebrates CCI’s 20th birthday with a retrospective of works spanning three decades. A founding member of the cult art performance band Virgin Prunes, Guggi continued to paint throughout his years in the band. He parted company with them in 1984 to focus exclusively on painting, and later sculpture. Since then, Guggi’s work has continued to explore the depiction of common everyday objects. With a focus on repetition and abstraction, Guggi’s signature motifs of bowls and other vessels are transformed and freed of their context. His work is often articulated with a deceptive simplicity that heightens their stillness and meditative presence. Art critic Kelly Grovier speaks of ‘excavations of dissolving form - half-remembered and half-erased - at once poignant and philosophical’.
