Un jeune homme s'habille sur une plage et autres images is the first solo exhibition in France by the Franco-Irish artist Samuel Laurence Cunnane (b. 1989, Co Kerry, Ireland).

Since graduating from art college in 2011, Samuel Laurence Cunnane has accumulated a quietly stirring and resonant body of work in his chosen medium of analogue photography. Over the past 14 years, the artist has moved back and forth between his hometown in Co Kerry, a rural enclave in Ireland’s Southeast, and a more nomadic existence , travelling across Iran, the Balkans, Central and Southern Europe, living in Berlin, and doing residencies in Bamberg and Guangzhou. Many of Cunnane’s journeys have been made in a retooled transit van, allowing him to live, work and make imagery on the road. And yet, despite the diverse geographic locales in which his photographs are taken, they share a singular, searching vision and sense of atmosphere.

Across Cunnane’s oeuvre, moments of connection and intimacy are forged with friends and strangers alike; the transient interiors of hotel rooms or friends’ apartments are studied attentively; the fading grandeur of European building stock is documented in time.The artist records quiet and easily overlooked moments of daily life and is drawn to the unnoticed periphery. His works deromanticise the popularly sentimental, and yet a sensitivity to light, framing and texture gives them a cinematic quality. Cunnane’s attachment to printing by hand in the darkroom serves to further heighten their poetic timbre and anachronistic feel.
