Sean Scully, The Horizontal and The Vertical

Daegu Art Museum presents Sean Scully: The Horizontal and The Vertical, a retrospective of the modern master of abstract painting, Sean Scully.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945, Sean Scully is widely recognized as one of the most significant contemporary artists, pioneering the evolution of abstract painting through metaphor, spirituality, and humanism over the past several decades. He is especially known for his distinctive style, characterized by rich colors and geometric forms, and continues to work actively in both Europe and the United States.

This exhibition marks the first large-scale retrospective of the artist in Korea, offering a comprehensive overview of his artistic journey by showcasing more than 70 works, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, spanning from the 1960s to the present. Featured in the exhibition are Scully’s renowned large-scale painting series, such as Wall of Light and Landline, as well as early figurative works, watercolors, pencil drawings, and digital prints—allowing for a multifaceted exploration of his artistic world.

Notably, two new large-scale sculptures will debut in this exhibition: Daegu Stack, a monumental steel structure created specifically for Daegu Art Museum, will be installed in the museum’s outdoor space, while 38, composed of stacked, painted aluminum frames, will be presented in the museum’s Umi Hall.

This retrospective provides a unique opportunity to experience the colors, structures, and delicate sensibilities that define the artistic world of Sean Scully, a master shaping the history of contemporary abstract painting.

Venue: Daegu Art Museum Gallery 1, Umi Hall
